Supporting Sibling Survivors: Understanding Grief
Sibling survivors are often referred to as the “forgotten mourners.” Their grief can be overlooked and misunderstood—not only by parents, families, and friends but sometimes even by the siblings themselves. While it’s natural for attention to focus on the parents of the lost child, we must also recognise the profound impact on siblings who have shared their lives with the deceased. These siblings face the heart-wrenching reality of a future they envisioned together, now altered forever.
The Importance of Acknowledging Sibling Grief
Sibling grief is unique and can often lead to feelings of isolation and confusion. Many siblings may minimise their own loss, feeling that their grief is less significant compared to that of their parents. At Brightest Star, we believe it is crucial to validate and support the emotional needs of siblings during this difficult time.
Play Therapy for Siblings Aged 4-16
To help address the needs of younger siblings, Brightest Star offers play therapy for children aged 4 to 16. Play therapy utiliaes play and art materials as a primary means of expression, allowing children to communicate their feelings in a way that feels natural to them. This therapeutic approach is especially beneficial for those who may struggle to articulate their emotions or experiences verbally. Through play, siblings can explore their grief, process their feelings, and begin to heal.

For adult siblings navigating their grief, Brightest Star provides counselling services at our office, Hulks Haven. Our trained professionals are here to offer support and guidance as they work through their emotions and experiences.
